An unprecedented encounter between author Roland Brival and pianist-composer Wilhem Latchoumia, Antheus is a new creation inspired by the history and cultural heritage of La Brière and its ties to the triangular trade.
Drawing on the history of this region north of the Loire estuary—which provided many sailors who embarked on triangular trade voyages—and on stories gathered from the inhabitants of La Brière, Roland Brival wrote Antheus, the tale of a shipwreck in the Caribbean Sea of a vessel bound for Martinique after taking on a cargo of enslaved people in Africa. From the wreck lying on the seabed, the voices of the dead rise one by one—those of the crew, and those of the human cargo chained in the hold. From every timber of the wreck emerge stories and songs that the wind will carry back to the shores of France.
In response to this evocation of the slave trade, pianist Wilhem Latchoumia has conceived a musical creation drawing on the classical and contemporary repertoire, as well as on original compositions.
